Art is a subjective and subliminal subject. One person’s appreciation of a piece of art can and often does differ widely from that of other people, but as human beings capable of rational thought and reason, it is our prerogative to interpret and assign the value of what we behold. Even though our standards may be covered with biases formed in our minds or hearts long ago, still there is room for such emotional preference when it comes to viewing art. This is because art at its most primal level inspires the expression of emotions and thoughts in a way that spoken language cannot. Art says many things, and nothing at all. Art is jealous and magnanimous simultaneously.

Have you ever considered what art might have to say about you if the tables were turned? Would the Mona Lisa painting be moved by the expression on your face and debate with the water lilies of Monet as to what gender you might actually be? Who can say? And yet, we are curious dreamers who reside in our own dreams. We are either artists, or are the art. The other thing we can do is merely appreciate the art of others. Some of the easiest art we learn to appreciate first is that made by children; as children ourselves, when other children were our contemporaries and we were beginning to form opinions as to what looked right and what didn’t, the art of other children helped (whether we realized it or not at the time) to formulate our schema for our own creativity and its fruits. It also emboldened us with a standard, however primitive, for judging the artistic expressions of others.

Art need not be a terribly serious concept. It can ignite feelings of introspection as we attempt to reconcile the implications of its appearance or obvious social statements with our own state of being, but that doesn’t have to mean that everything is all scowls and academia. In fact, many works of art that I have seen lately have been less about academia and more about macadamia! That’s okay, though, because artists are known to be a little nutty. So are the people who buy and sell art, and who bid for it at the auctions by Sotheby’s, and who venture to display it in their homes. It isn’t good enough to simply own a piece of art; you must know what it is saying about you and who that is being said to.

When I was a kid I drew constantly. It did not matter where we went or what tools I had, I would draw. I remember sitting in restaurants drawing pictures on napkins or finding scrap paper that I could draw on during church. I just loved to draw.

This did not change as I got older. Drawing was still one of my favorite things to do. In fact, it was just a couple of years ago that I decided that I wanted to pursue drawing as a career. You might be sitting there, reading this, and wondering how I would actually make a living doing this. I get it, drawing is not in popular demand as a job. Unless I could get a job at a theme park doing caricatures or something like that, right?

Well, that’s where it started, what was I going to do? If you are an artist and you want to make a living out of your work, then you will come to the point when you realize you will have to choose a profession like a graphic artist or cartoonist or whatever. So that’s the starting off point, and after you realize that you cannot just simply draw for a living you are on the right track.

I decided that I could use my drawing for something bigger. I decided that I wanted to learn to screenprint. Now, screenprinting is a technique that allows you to transfer images to fabric. Of course, it is not as simple as just drawing that image. There are computer programs and printers involved too. So whatever path you decide to take, be prepared to find out that there will be more involved than you might have originally thought.

No matter what your passion is, it is possible to find a career that will allow you to incorporate what it is that you love to do the most.

Green is definitely a universal buzzword in today’s society. Everything we do has a “green” way for it to be done. Corporations are launching massive re-branding campaigns to help consumers see them in the light of global consciousness and a desire by those companies to go green along with everyone else. Just this year we saw the arrival of the Pepsi and Coke soda bottles that were green because they are made completely from plan material, according to them. More green cars are hitting the market every day, promising lower emissions. Where does this leave the environmentally conscious artist, then? How can artists and crafters go green? Let’s find out.

There are plenty of resources for artists and crafts makers who want to go green. All you need is to know where the green art supplies come from and how you can do your part by ordering from companies who share your desire to save the planet, one work of art at a time. The following infographic you can find excellent places to order green supplies from, not only for arts and crafts, but also a host of other terrific categories. This is a good, overall “green” primer as well as a provider of resources for artists.

You see the thing that a lot of people do not understand about artists is that for an artist there is always something to create or something to be used to create incredible and astonishing works. That means that anything can be art inspiring or worthy of use to create a masterpiece. For example you might look at a pair of dirty old socks balled up on the floor and you think, “gross, those are some dirty old socks.” An artist would see them and think “oh, those dirty old socks could be used in my new work of art.” Do you see the difference?

One of the greatest examples of this difference between artists and everyday average individuals that I have seen this week is salt art. That’s right creating art with salt. Looking at a salt shaker most people see one thing, something that adds in flavor and maybe even something unhealthy when used in large amounts. That’s normal. Well, in the video below you will witness what one guy sees when he looks at salt. It is so impressive the work that he creates with a simple grainy white substance. You just have to see it to believe it. Check it out!

The art of gemology and jewel crafting has produced some of the world’s most alluring museum pieces, many of which are under lock and key or adt security. Keeping the jewels safe from heists and burglaries is a round the clock job, yet invariably, these masterful works of jewels making have still managed to go missing at times. Today, we will be taking a look at some of the most famous diamonds and pieces of jewelry in existence today and learn a thing or two about them that we might not have known.

For example, did you know that the Four Cs of the Gemological Institute of America that determine a jewel’s value are carat, cut, color, and clarity? These four measures of value are generally accepted around the world as the most important markers of worth. The jewels you are very soon to read about all have outstanding ratings in each of the four Cs, and some are quite large. Therefore, these represent the most expensive pieces of jewelry in the entire world. They are also, needless to say, the most attractive to certain individuals who might aspire to become infamous for pulling off a heist. I wonder why?

Have you ever looked closely at your paintings and thought to yourself, “something’s missing?” Color theory and color harmony are important aspects of your paintings, but in some art classes, you will never hear about those. Simple advice on drawing lines, using tools, and arranging objects are all necessary and fine, but there are a lot of “fundamentals of painting” elements that are seldom encountered in art school. If you are trying to improve your painting, to really make your art better and easier for you and more natural, then you have to find someplace to learn these things. Simple tips such as “your shoulder is too stiff,” or “you’re holding that brush too loosely” are not going to cut it. So where do you learn the basics?

One place might be to seek out advanced instruction from a successful artist – something easier to do now than in the past, thanks to multimedia video presentations and other modern media. Artist Daniel Edmondson has a collection that has helped some friends and relatives. Check out his video to learn more:

Some artists insist that infographics are not a form of art. When asked about this, the reasons most cited include the intention of the creator; art is created for reasons other than marketing, while infographics are primarily works of graphic design intended to promote a viral distribution that increases awareness in that company’s brand somehow. Artists have themes, messages that mean something on a high social level, something with more than a fleeting purpose. Graphics designers ten to be more concerned with getting a marketing message out there in an eye-catching way and hoping that it gains viral popularity based on clever subject matter and other trend-aware indications.

There is nothing wrong with infographics being called art, though. It just depends on what kind of art you are talking about. There are, as mentioned above, several artists who we might call “art snobs” who like to downgrade the infographic from something artistic and worthwhile from a visual perspective, to something mundane and market oriented. But they should not overlook the people who are designing the infographics, many of whom do in fact regard themselves are artists. They spend hours analyzing what colors might be the most effective and convey the right message. They use precision and their own clever ability to discern the reactions of audiences they will likely never hear from, but they still invest a great part of themselves in their work. They still realize that what they do is colorful, beautiful (in some cases) and also has a timeless quality.

Some of the world’s greatest artists have been graphic designers. Look at Andy Warhol, for instance. His career began with making labels for soup cans, and progressed into pop art that has become iconic in the design industry. There are other artists as well who begin their careers in graphic arts.

So, don’t be so quick to write off infographics as mere marketing tools. They, too, can be art.

If you like breaking up the monotony of a busy day with a few minutes of creative sketching, coloring, and artistic creativity, then the Harmony app (by Mr Doob, available from the Google Chrome Web Store, for free) is just the ticket. With this app you can design rather impressive looking works of art easily. A number of brushes and tools transforms your browser window into a canvass where you can use tools with names like Sketchy, Shaded, Chrome, Fur, Long Fur, and Web to apply textured stroked to a blank white page. Each of these has its own charm, so you’ll want to experiment to find just the perfect combination for whatever art you have in mind.

Changing the color is straightforward and anyone who has ever played with even a basic drawing or painting program will instantly recognize how to accomplish this. The two small squares located to the left of the tools drop-down menu allows you to select the color you want to paint or sketch with, and the background color. The one tool that would be really useful here, and is nowhere to be seen, is an undo button. You can’t even actually erase a previous stroke — but the work around is to change the ink color to the background color, and just draw over your mistake. This can be tedious as well, since you also cannot change the brush size.

One nice thing you can do, however, is clear the whole thing with the convenient “clear” button. You can also save your work if you like it. Unfortunately, during this review, when I clicked “save,” I got the “Aw…snap!” error message that something had gone awry loading the page, and that I needed to either reload, or try something else. The result was the loss of my painting. It’s just not there anymore. I worked a long time on that daisy-like digital flower! ”Aw, snap!” doesn’t begin to summarize how I feel at this moment. So actually, I think I will not be recommending Harmony to anyone who might get even remotely attached to his or her work in course of a few mindless moments of doodling between assignments. Still, it is a fun app. And for what it’s worth, I think many people would enjoy it.

Many students entering four-year colleges and universities are drawn to the glamour of earning a degree in some field related to art. Some people decide to major in art history, or art education, while others choose more specific areas of concentration like 3D design, calligraphy, or marbling. These sound pretty obscure to most people. Any concerned parent of a student who might be interested in an art degree would probably protest such an idea. After all, what in the world can a person do with a four year degree in art, of all things?

So parents, don’t worry if your student wants to run away to art school! He or she can do well with a career in an art-related field.
